Orcas Pass Through

Orca and Ship RockOrcas at West EndOracs on their way northThis morning we awoke to the VHF radios buzzing about Orca (killer whales) sightings off the island.  A bunch of us got in our boats and went out to see for ourselves.  It was amazing!  There were little family groupings of Orcas all over the place.  They were moving toward the west end and passed right behind Bird Rock and in front of Ship Rock.  I probably saw close to 15 family groups of 2-4 orcas each.  Huge adults with little babies.  They swam right past the boats and some even rolled over on their side to get a closer look at us.  Many people had their cameras and the photos here were taken by Becky Mucha.  Thanks Becky!

Natural events like this can never be planned. Being able to witness such an amazing, spontaneous site is one of the reasons Catalina Island is such a special place.
