Catalina Island Eco-Marathon
Catalina Island Eco-Marathon
This Saturday, hundreds of runners will participate in one of the running world’s most beautiful and challenging new traditions: the Catalina Eco-Marathon.
The 26.2-mile course will begin and end in the town of Avalon, and will take participants through a dizzying array of valleys, ridges, and spectacular views along some of Catalina’s most rarely-used trails and roads. For those not ready to tackle the entire 26.2 miles, 10K and 5K courses are also offered.
The marathon is benefitting the construction of the Trans-Catalina Trail, a trail being constructed by the Catalina Conservancy that will traverse the entirety of Catalina Island. Marathon runners will be among the first to run some of that trail, which is expected to open early in 2009.
The race will begin at 8:15 on November 15. For more information, go to www.catalinaecomarathon.com

It was a spectacular day for the Eco-Marathon (although a bit warm for the middle of November). It looked like a good turnout for all the races, Marathon, 10K and 5K. Dean Karnazes showed his documentary “Ultra Marathon Man” in the Theater last night. This is the film about his running 50 marathons in 50 days and in 50 different states…yikes! Paula Newby Frasier (8-Time Iron Man winner) was also at the showing of Dean’s movie. Both Dean and Paula ran in today’s marathon as well.
