The Trans-Catalina Trail is now open!

Trans-Catalina TrailHikers and backpackers rejoice! It is now possible to traverse the length of Catalina Island on foot without having to dodge cars or choke on road dust!

The Trans-Catalina Trail officially opened up today, April 4, 2009, marking the beginning of a new era in back country recreation on the island. The trail links together a series of existing trails and jeep tracks with almost eight miles of new single-track.

The trail begins just outside Avalon at the Renton Mine Road trailhead near Mt. Ada and finishes up at the picturesque Starlight Beach at the island’s west end for a total journey of 37.2 miles. Hikers also have the option of beginning at the Hermit Gulch Campground in Avalon Canyon. Starting at Hermit Gulch cuts about five miles off the first leg but makes it easier for those of us who wake up a little later to get to Blackjack peak; the first of four campgrounds along the way.

Most people will need four full days to travel the entire length of the trail but if you are a super gung-ho trail monster traveling light, you could pull it off in a very long day…. Maybe. The trail follows along with the spirit of the island and is a blend of easy going sections where you can relax and drink in the view; beautiful but challenging areas along the canyons and ridges; and some tough adventureous stretches thrown in to keep you on your toes. There are rumors of plans to add some scenic loops or side trails in the future, but don’t tell anyone I told you this!

For more information on hiking the trail, drop a line to Kevin Ryan at the Catalina Island Conservancy at kryan@catalinaconservancy.org or call the Conservancy offices at 310-510-2595. Backcountry hiking permits and campground reservations are required and can be obtained when you arrive in Avalon or Two Harbors. (But call ahead for the reservations!)
