Flying Fish are Back!
Well, its official! The Flying Fish have returned to the waters around Catlina! I was driving my skiff back into the harbor the other night after an evening fishing outing when I saw a flying fish leap into the air and glide across the waves ahead of me. No doubt the fierce look of my under-used fishing rod scared it out of the water!
Totally coincidental, but entirely related, the last weekend of May will bring in the second running of Avalon’s Annual Flying Fish Festival! The weekend of fun begins on Thursday May 28, with the 2009 Taste Around of Avalon. This event features many of the city’s top restaurants competing to see who can come up with the best new food, drink, or dessert. This is like the ultimate stroll-around buffet! For the rest of the weekend, Avalon will be a hotspot for flying fish excitement. There are special discounts on nightly Flying Fish Tours (Call 800-626-1496 or go to the website ), sand sculptures, a street fair, tons of interactive experiences and contests for the children, a parade, and best of all… Gill the Flying Fish! (Look out Mickey Mouse!)
To add to the mix, on Saturday, May 30th, the Avalon Casino will be celebrating its 80th anniversary! That is going to be a fun event! The fun starts at 7:30 with a celebration and dance hosted by the ultimate Beach Boys tribute band, Good Vibrations. And… everyone gets free dessert! (You can get tickets by calling 800-322-3434)
If you are looking for a great American getaway, this weekend might be the best for you! The Island Company has several great packages put together to combine Catalina Express boat tickets, Hotel, and activities. (And you can save a bit of green too!) So come on over and visit us!
