Catalina’s Airport in the Sky 50th Anniversary Celebration

Airport 50th AnniversaryCelebrating 50 years of general aviation operation!

Join the Catalina Island Conservancy and its Pilot Supporters for a celebration honoring 50 years of service to general aviation. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, October 18, 2009 at the Airport in the Sky (AVX).

Up until 1959, the Airport in the Sky was only available to those who leased land and facilities from the Santa Catalina Island Company. In October of that year, it all changed when 40 privately owned planes were flown in to start a new era for private pilots all over the world.

On October 18, landing fees will be rolled back to 1959 prices – only $3! There will be an all-day barbecue on the patio featuring Skyburgers, Buffalo Burgers, Veggie Burgers, beans, cole slaw, a cookie and lemonade or iced tea.

Enjoy presentations on the history of Catalina aviation, and view vintage airplanes. There will be guided hikes and Jeep® Eco-Tours. Live music will be provided by Airport House Band “Hot Off the Range.”
